A practical explanation of Bronchoscopy procedure for the patient and their loved ones. The role of the bronchoscopy procedure in the management of lung cancer, abnormal chest xrays, a lung mass, a lung nodule, pneumonia and other diseases is reviewed. History of bronchoscopy and the variety of bronchoscopes available are discussed. Bronchoscopy biopsy procedure is highlighted.
Bronchoscopy was first performed in 1897 by the German physician Gustav Killian. Dr. Killian performed rigid bronchoscopy. Rigid bronchoscopy was the only available technique for bronchoscopy until the late 1970's when fiberoptic technology was applied to bronchoscopy. With the advent of "interventional pulmonology", a sub-specialty of pulmonary medicine, rigid bronchoscopy is being performed more frequently but far less often than flexible bronchoscopy.
